The first series featuring the beloved internet sensation Grumpy Cat only ran for three issues before publisher Dynamite Entertainment decided to start over again. Not a whole lot has changed between the two series, and most of the same creative talent is involved in Grumpy Cat and Pokey #1.
One new addition is Agnes Garbowska, who joined forces with Ben Fisher to tell the first story of the debut issue. It takes our disinterested heroine and her trusted ally on a mission to be inspired. As a whole, this is the weakest of the three stories included in the issue, as the willingness of Grumpy Cat to go along on this mission without any ulterior motives seems quite out of character. The art is decent, though there is a few strange artistic choices along the way.
The second story is by Ben McCool and Steven Uy. It finds our duo in a race to the top of the tallest tree in the neighborhood. True to form, Grumpy uses a mixture of mischief and self-preservation to get her way. The writing is humorous, and the art fits the story well.
While the second story is good, the third and final story is probably the best of the three. Writer Elliott Serrano and artist Ken Haeser follow Grumpy and Pokey on a mysterious journey through ancient China, as they search for a massive gold ball of yarn. The story is told as a backdrop for Grumpy’s attempt to make Pokey fall asleep, and gives our righteous heroine a chance to impose her own self-image on a fabled warrior. The clever writing mixed with the fantastic artwork makes this a standout story for the issue.
VERDICT
Overall, Grumpy Cat and Pokey #1 pretty much continues the formula that was established in the earlier series. Pokey is the lovable, optimistic oaf, and is complemented well by Grumpy Cat’s witty, sarcastic personality. The three stories included in the issue are entertaining as a whole, though the first story does stumble a bit along the way. The artwork is good for the most part, with a few standout moments in the last story. Well worth a read for fans of witty and sarcastic humor.
Grumpy Cat & Pokey #1 earns a respectable 7 out of 10.
